2019-05 Washington DC

In May 2019, My son and I traveled to Washington DC by way of Cape May, NJ.  Our entire photo album can be seen here. The ride to Cape May was fairly uneventful. We live a little over 2 hours from Cape May and pass several really nice beach towns on the way down the Garden State Parkway ( Exit 125! ) but we like the quiet family atmosphere of Cape May and one night we will venture into Wildwood for a night at the piers.  My family tries to go down to Cape May every Memorial day weekend and while we do not make it down every year, we have gone down about 5 times in the past 10 years. We have tried some Bed and Breakfast and did not like them, we have tried AirBNBs and they are always either too expensive or lack something that we are looking for, normally a pool. So now we have sort of gravitated to the Grand Hotel which is on Beach avenue and is probably the last of the big hotels on the south side of Beach avenue.

This is a pretty good photo of some of the Bed and Breakfast lodges right on Beach Avenue in Cape May.  We normally spend 4 or 5 days in Cape May with one night devoted to Wildwood and the drive home we try to stop at the Cape May Zoo.  Once done with Cape May, the family drove home but myself, My son Chandler and my Uncle Frank drove down to Washington DC.  The 3 of us love DC.  We did a bus tour with Old Town Trolley for 2 days.  We have done Old Town Trolley tours in Key West, Nashville, Charleston South Carolina and New York City and they are always great.  They are open air buses so if it is very hot or cold, dress accordingly.  We visited nearly every stop on the tour from the White House and the National mall to the National Cathedral and the National Zoo.  My tip for Old Town Trolley is to get to them early and do a full lap on the bus to understand the tour loop, then go explore.  My uncle and son are not big walkers so I normally went on a bike ride early in the morning through Arlington Virginia so that I get my workout and during the day we could rely heavily on bus and the Metro.  The subway, called the Metro, in Washington DC is great and I recommend getting a Metro Card while in DC because it is pretty clean and is usually the fastest way around town.  Once in the city, Our favorite stops on the Trolley Tour this time were Marine Core Memorial at right and the fairly new African American History museum.  The museum is an entire experience and tells of the harshness and the understated story of slavery of Africans to countries around the world.  The Museum uses harsh exhibits and language and may not be well suited for small children.  If you were planning on bringing them, I recommend doing some research before going to determine if it is appropriate for your children.  If you want to see more, Our entire photo album can be seen here
